John Baxter book cover The Beach

A short story available in New Writings in SF - 13, edited by John Carnell, published in hardback by Dobson Books Ltd 1968 and in paperback by Corgi Books, London, 1968.

The Beach is a science fiction short story set in some post-collapse-of-civilisation future. A loose and anarchic collection of individuals lives on/in a beach (how? why?). Much of their clothing has disintegrated to uselessness as have most of the man-made items which appear in the story: houses, cars, books, umbrellas.

While not really anything to do with naturism as such, I like the description of something which is so common on a naturist beach: a tanned woman leaving the sea. Of course, simply because such an event happens in a naturist setting doesn't mean there can be no sensual or erotic overtones - as can be found in the extract. Baxter's Jael is honest about enjoying this bit of people-watching, and why should he not enjoy it?
